All of these classes will be based on creating small pieces of stitched work. Most of the work will be done using a sewing machine, but some handwork will also be demonstrated.
Samples created during each class can be used in A4 size pieces of textile art, or as jewellery.
Using Metallic Threads: Making the most of Metallics
Whether you’re aiming for all-out bling or a shimmer of sparkle, there is a metallic thread for the purpose, and needle and tension settings to help your stitching shine! From creating small, embroidered pieces which can be worn as jewellery to quilting shine onto a large piece, metallic thread does the lot.
In this class we’ll be looking at the different ways you can use metallic threads: in the bobbin, couching and through the needle. I’ll also be demonstrating how different presser feet can help you make the most of some of the threads which are available today.
Using Feature Threads: Thick Threads as a Feature
There is no easier way to embellish a piece of stitching than by adding an unusual thread to the mix. Invariably added to the surface, these threads always add the finishing touch to any project. I have a few tricks and tips to help you make the most of that delicious, had-to-have-it thread that you took home and wondered how on earth you would use it.
Sheer Delight: Working with Sheer Fabrics and Water Soluble Film
Many of my recent pieces of work have been designed around working with sheers and threads. Few techniques give as much bang for your buck as adding a lace-like layer to a piece of textile art, and the beauty of this technique is that the pattern is created in straight stitches. Layers of sheer fabrics are used to create a base on which to draw with your sewing machine needle and luscious variegated threads.
Threadpainting: Putting it all Together
I would love to be able to paint, but have never conquered my fear of using paints and brushes. But I’ve discovered that I can create little pieces of art by drawing with the needle and beautiful thread, which holds no fear for me at all. I then add them to the surface of a quilt – much less scarey than painting with either acrylic or dyes on a large, expensive piece of fabric for me!
